CHAPTER 7
The Pilot Episode

NOVEL

Ho-Jon, the Korean houseboy working in the Swamp, is drafted into the South Korean army. He is subsequently wounded and sent back to the 4077th for treatment. After rehabilitation, he resumes his position as Swampboy. The Swampmen, who are very fond of Ho-Jon, arrange to have him sent to Hawkeye's old college. To raise funds, Trapper grows a beard, dresses up like Jesus Christ, and autographs thousands of photos which the Swampmen sell for a buck apiece.

Hawkeye sat up, lit a butt, and said, “Hey, Trapper, how fast can you grow that beard back?”

“Couple weeks. What do you have in mind?”

“Money for Ho-Jon.”

“How’s that Yankee growin’ a beard gonna get money for Ho-Jon?” asked Duke.

“Easy. We’ll get a good picture of him, have copies made, and sell actual photographs of Jesus Christ at a buck a throw. If we make out with that, he can make a few personal appearances.”

Trapper looked interested. “Always knew I’d make good,” he said, “but I never thought I’d get to the top so fast.”

Dear Hawkeye:

I deposited five thousand dollars in the Port Waldo Trust Company for Ho-Jon. How come you can send some foreigner to college and leave me to bail your brothers out of jail? I always encouraged you to go to school, and now look what happens. Your brother Joe got took up for drunken driving. Mother is well.

Your father,

FILM

Ho-Jon is drafted, and Hawkeye drives him to the induction center. The doctor who examines Ho-Jon discovers that Hawkeye has given him stimulants to quicken his heart rate and raise his blood pressure.

The elements of this story appear as a few disjointed scenes. In the screenplay, Ho-Jon is wounded and sent to the 4077th. However, his surgery is unsuccessful and he dies. The final film omits this storyline, although a few of the scenes remain with overdubbed dialogue.

“Hi, Dad!”

“Trapper, this one’s for you.”

“I have an Oklahoma. A pair of eights, a
ten of spades, a deuce and a five.”

DELETED SCENES: Trapper and Hawkeye realize that their patient is Ho-Jon. The doctors discover a thrombosis in Ho-Jon’s artery, which they cannot repair.
